Marzano's strategy on reinforcing efforts and providing recognition address students' attitudes and beliefs. Most students are not aware of the importance of believing that their level of effort is related to their achievement. When students are rewarded or praised for achieving specific goals, their level of achievement is higher.

  • Marzano's key points
  • Guide students to understand effort in relationship to achievement
  • Explicitly teach the importance of effort.
  • Students can and should track effort and achievement and self-evaluate on a rubric
  • Rewards are most effective when contingent upon a standard of performance which enhances intrinsic motivation.
  • Abstract recognition is more effective than tangible rewards (verbal praise, gestures, body movement) all specific to achievement
  • Use concrete symbols of recognition like awards, stickers, certificates all specific to achievement

Pause

If a mistake occurs, pause; wait to give the student a chance to solve the problem. Allow a few moments for thinking time before expecting an answer.

Prompt

Give a hint or lead to encourage a response.

Praise

At all times it is important that students are praised and encouraged in their efforts. Use a variety of encouraging words and phrases to support students with their attempts. Your praise will greatly assist students’ literacy development.
