In cooperative learning classroom, students are split into small teams each with students of varying ability. They utilize a variety of learning activities and gain knowledge from one another in the process. Cooperative learning teaches students to work together for the good of the team and to appreciate the work that each individual of the group has done.
Cooperative learning techniques have been shown to cause students to retain more information, help students gain better social skills, and that students enjoy these techniques more than lectures by the teacher.
Five Key Elements of Cooperative Learning
1. Positive Interdependence(sink or swim together) This is achieved when the group respects each individuals abilities and realizes that they need every person in the group to succeed in order for the group to succeed.
2. Face-to-Face Interaction(promote each other's success) This is where each group member teaches other group members. They make sure that everyone in the group understands and if they don't, they will teach them.
3. Individual & Group Accountability(no hitchhiking) Students understand that while the success of the group is important, they must carry their own weight and have their own responsibilities as well.
4. Interpersonal & Small-Group Skills(teamwork and social skills) Students learn decision making, teamwork, and trust building.
5. Group Processing(self-assessment) The group must analyze their work and find where they can improve.
